Job Description

Supervises sample activity within the Racine plant and develops a suitable workforce to support plant objectives in Safety, Quality, Delivery and Cost.


Hires, trains, develops and disciplines a staff of 20-30 skilled trades people over two shifts.

Ensures the shop operates under internal company, local, state and federal regulatory guidelines with regard to health safety and the environment.

Procures all materials for the shop including raw materials for samples and operating supplies.

Works with labor union to resolve issues as they arise and handling grievances as required.

Works with engineering, sales and upper management to decide processing plans and establish priorities.

Develops work schedule across two shifts.

Directs workforce and assigns jobs to provide the best utilization of manpower.

Develops and maintains an annual departmental expense budget of ≈ $500,000, a capital equipment budget of ≈ $500,000 and an annual salary budget of $1.5M - $2M.

Manages other departments, on a short term basis, as required.

Stays current with technology and new manufacturing processes.

Supports other departments through the work order system.

Ensures equipment is maintained by initiating Technical Service Requests.

Works with internal and external suppliers to support prototype development and meet customer expectations in Quality, Delivery and Cost (annual outpurchases ~ $250,000).

Provides sales and engineering cost estimates for prototypes.

Maintains high organization, plant keeping and efficiency standards through 5s, 7 wastes and MPS initiatives.

Develops harmonious working relationships both internal and external of the department.

Manages WIP and finished goods inventories in excess of $500,000.

Other duties may be required as assigned by the Racine Plant Services Manager.


Minimum of 3 years supervision experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably metalworking.

Must be able to interpret engineering drawings and articulate ideas and concepts.

Must be capable of exercising independent judgment.

Outstanding communication skills; written, group, and oral.

Outstanding interpersonal and facilitation skills.

Disciplined self-starter with excellent analytical and organizational skills.

Self-confidence and professionalism to successfully interact throughout the organization, both vertically and horizontally.

PC literate and proficient in MS products (Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, etc.).

Proven ability to work independently and confidentially, with limited direction, and to self-proof his/her own work.

Demonstrated conflict management skills.


Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Operations, Industrial Technology, Business or equivalent.
