Project Accountant Job Description


The Project Accountant will facilitate contract, financial and scheduling performance management throughout the entire contract management life-cycle (i.e. from proposal to customer final acceptance) .The position will be responsible for assisting in development of estimates, schedule of values, work breakdown structures, schedule evaluations, cost to complete, earned value analysis, and support to multiple technical, program, and business managers; and continually monitoring contractual processes and procedures for quality improvement across a portfolio of contracts. The role will require the successful candidate to serve as a champion of contract life-cycle management to increase efficiencies and quality in the organization.

General Duties:

* Analyze, track actual cost and understand all the details behind the cost to complete estimate (% of completion method of accounting.) Prepare/review monthly journal entries for revenue and cost on the projects.

* Provide guidance to ensure project economics, risks, and opportunities are transparent to the project team and group leadership. Monitor "earned value" versus "revenue recognized". Including the development of the project control plan.

* Along with the project manager, prepare project budgets and forecasts (revenues and cost); challenge forecast based upon project knowledge, monthly reports, historical trends, and relevant KPI's.

* Create project Budgetary Work Breakdown Structure; partner with PM to develop estimate-to-complete (ETC's) and estimate-at-completion (EAC's) that align to the operational milestones and a Work Breakdown Structure.

* Assist Project Management in tracking and keeping cost on all sub-contracts (Third-Party and Intercompany) issued for the project to ensure that payments are made correctly and the remaining costs are forecasted accurately. Manage the cash flow of the project; work with PM to achieve positive cash flow through the duration of the program; monitor customer accounts receivable and be proactive in the collection of past due amounts.

* Will be responsible for a few large projects (>$5m) which require more maintenance and interaction with project teams as well as very minor maintenance on a variety of small projects.

* Handle account analysis as assigned.

* Other duties assigned by Controller.


* Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration/Management, or related field, required

* 2+ years of relevant experience in project controls for small and large projects (>$5M).

* Extensive knowledge / experience creating and maintaining budgets to include project cost accounting, cost allocation, and revenue recognition.

* Knowledge of various contract types (fixed price, T & M)

* Advanced knowledge of MS tools( Excel, SharePoint Editor, Word, etc.) to creating financial reports and dash boards; must be able to mine data and perform trend analysis

* Experience with fully integrated ERP System -Oracle

* Must be detail oriented, with strong organization and time management skills

* Ability to meet critical deadlines and successfully facilitate constructive engagements

Analyze financial information and prepare financial reports to determine or maintain record of assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liability, or other financial activities within an organization. Includes Accountants in the areas of Cost, Government, Forensic, Payroll, Project, etc. Also includes titles of Accounting Specialist, Analyst, Senior, Manager, Director and Supervisor.
